Author Carroll Brown's book "The Fort" is a riveting crime drama following an investigation into the seemingly unsolvable murders that rocked the quiet Shenandoah Valley
Recent release "The Fort" from Page Publishing author Carroll Brown is a gripping and potent work of fiction pitting an intrepid team of active and retired law enforcement professionals investigating a series of crimes bearing the unmistakable hallmarks of a professional assassin in Virginia's pristine and historic Shenandoah County.
INWOOD, W.V., Oct. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Coralea Brown, the wife of the late Carroll Brown, an engineer who worked for both county building departments and private firms in Virginia and Florida before his retirement, has published his book "The Fort": a spellbinding thriller that keeps the pages turning until its dramatic conclusion.
The author wrote, "The fort is not an artificial structure of concrete and steel but a valley enclosed by mountains near the center of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The valley is twenty-three miles long and about five miles wide at its widest point measured from the top of the ridge at the fire tower lookout in the west to the ridge top of Page Mountain in the east.
The Indian name for the valley was Massanutten, meaning 'Indian basket' due to the abundance of wild game and water. It is believed from documented research of early records that the first White settler in the Shenandoah Valley was Mr. George Brock in 1749. The earliest White settler in the fort itself was a frontiersman named Powell, a renegade, counterfeiter, and purported spy for both the Indians and the British. Eventually, the area around Waterlick came to be known as Powell's fort. Later, it became known simply as the Fort. George Washington surveyed the area for Lord Fairfax in 1749 beginning at Buzzards Roost on the Passage Creek, what is now known as Slippery Rock Ford. During the Revolutionary War when losing ground to British Washington developed plans to retreat to the Fort Valley as a last stand should the need arise. The high slop- ing rock walls at Buzzards Roost at Passage Creek provided a natural defensive position from which to fight the British army. This gem, "this valley within a valley," steeped in American history and lore is the setting for this novel of fiction. The geographic locations are real and still exist, along with many of the historic structures mentioned in this novel. The author has attempted to weave a story of fiction drawn on a number of actual and fictional events spanning a forty-year period. The fictional characters are a composite of all my dear friends and mortal enemies...collected over my years living in the valley. So sit back, pour a glass of Knob Creek Bourbon, start a fire in the fireplace, and walk with me into the misty lore and legend of...the Fort."
