Author Releases Personal Tale of Addiction and Recovery
Author Believes That Rehab and 12-Step Programs are Not a One-Size-Fits-All Solution
BRENTWOOD, Calif., July 5, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Through sharing his own struggles with mental illness, substance abuse, and recovery, author Skyler Pennington hopes to show that addiction recovery is possible in his new book "Recovery Despite Rehab."
In the book Pennington offers a unique perspective on what he describes as "America's broken mental healthcare system" and treatment of patients suffering from addiction.
"America's fragmented mental healthcare system and treatment of addiction promotes an outdated cure that is often far worse than the disease it supposedly treats," Pennington said. "This is a treatment that exacerbates addictive behaviors, mental illness, and increases average substance misuse. If mental illness and addictive behaviors are to be combatted, reduced, or eliminated, the core foundation of societal values, as well as beliefs about addiction recovery and our mental health ecosystem, must be rebuilt from the ground up."
"Recovery Despite Rehab" follows Pennington's life, starting from his youth. From being diagnosed at an early age with autism, to dealing with traumatic events in middle and high school, to slowly succumbing to the influence of drugs and alcohol his senior year, Pennington shares intimate details of his path to addiction.
Pennington hopes that, by sharing his own story, others facing similar struggles with find inspiration and understand that there is a solution out there, and it may not be traditional rehab; that they can find themselves again and have a happy life, free from addiction.
