It's The Battery?
"Many times when a heart rate monitor stops producing accurate heart rate data it is a battery issue, either in the watch, in the transmitter, or both," says Squire. He adds, "Sometimes it can be a strap that needs replacing or the strap needs to be paired to the watch, plus some people need gel to boost transmission".
"Batteries can easily be tested with a $7 battery tester from Home Depot, in fact we were testing some of the new stock of 3 volt batteries in our Polar heart rate monitors this morning," says Squire. He adds, "We generally recommend that customers replace both batteries every 10 months and the strap once per year to insure consistent operation".
The GPS Revolution
GPS watches like the new Garmin Forerunner 620 or Suunto Ambit 2 use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries according to Squire. "With these types of watches you only need to replace the battery about every three to four years but you still need to replace the straps annually," says Squire.
It's The Watch?
"Generally, it is a good idea to change out both the transmitter and the watch battery at the same time since two batteries only cost around $3," says Squire. He adds, "If the watch is showing time then generally it will display heart rate".
