Sierra Trading Post thinks outside the box with its upcoming Free Black Friday contest, rewarding lucky Black Friday shoppers with shopping sprees and/or gift cards to be used at SierraTradingPost.com or at one of Sierra Trading Post's four outlet stores.

Sierra Trading Post is asking people to share their thoughts on Black Friday shopping to be entered into the Free Black Friday contest. People can enter by using the #FreeBlackFriday hashtag in a tweet, making posts on Facebook or on personal websites, and by submitting comments on the Free Black Friday page. Sierra Trading Post will pick its favorite entries, and while the exact amounts of prizes will remain a mystery until the morning of Black Friday (11/27/09), Sierra Trading Post promises it's well worth the wait.

This Black Friday online sales are expected to increase 8% and in-store sales expected to decline by at least 1% (National Retail Federation, 2009). "We suspect that this Black Friday will see more online-savvy shoppers than ever before," says Naomi Berg, social marketing specialist for Sierra Trading Post. "This is a perfect opportunity for a Black Friday contest because of the decline in overall spending and the increased use of social marketing sites such as Facebook and Twitter. As far as we can tell, no other retailers are doing anything quite like this."

Since retailers have experienced stagnant growth in traditional marketing channels due to a turbulent economy, many have began to turn to social and interactive websites. Sierra Trading Post continues to be among those taking alternate marketing routes by stretching even further into a new avenue of media to creatively present unique contests and prizes as well as its message of "Great Deals. Great Brands." Following the Free Black Friday contest, customers can look forward to the Cyber Monday contest. Details will be announced on Black Friday.

"We're hoping to stay ahead of the curve by utilizing interactive contests via alternate marketing channels--something most direct marketers haven't done for traditional Black Friday sales, " Berg says. "While most companies are just offering doorbuster deals and in-store discounts, Sierra Trading Post is giving customers a fun new way to make their Black Friday shopping experience unlike any other. Sierra Trading Post's innovative contest allows shoppers the opportunity to not only save big on their holiday shopping, but to win big."

Winners will be announced through Twitter, Facebook, Blog.SierraTradingPost.com and the Black Friday page.
