On Saturday, June 15th, Big Paws Canine Foundation will host their first annual Poker Run to benefit disabled veterans and their service dogs. Participants will enjoy food, live entertainment, and exciting raffle prizes, all for a terrific cause.

Big Paws Canine Foundation, based out of Mira Loma, California, is excited to announce their First Annual Poker Run. This event will take place on Saturday, June 15th, 2013, and its proceeds will benefit the foundation’s core cause: providing service dogs to disabled veterans in need.

The run will have three starting points: Corona, San Diego, and South Orange County area. Groups at each starting point will get on the road at 9AM and will meet up at the finish line at Biggs Harley-Davidson in San Marcos, Calif. Participants from all over the southwest are already slated to attend, but the more people who register, the more money that can be raised for the Big Paws Canine Foundation.

In conjunction with the run, Big Paws will also host a raffle with an exciting grand prize: either a 2013 Harley-Davidson Street Glide or Road Glide motorcycle. The winner will get to choose which bike he or she takes home. In order to qualify for the grand prize drawing, participants will need to purchase a separate raffle ticket, which can be done at Biggs Harley-Davidson or any of Big Paws Canine’s events in the coming months. Interested parties can visit to sign up or to find a registration event in their area.

According to Big Paws founder Steve Slavik, who himself is a veteran, 90% of those veterans who have been wounded in the line of duty who would benefit from service dogs cannot afford the associated costs. The training, feeding, and veterinary care of a new service dog can cost up to $40,000, which is simply beyond the reach of many veterans. That is exactly why Slavik founded Big Paws Canine Foundation. The Foundation raises money to cover these costs, as well as any other associated with these services dogs, in order to provide veterans with the assistance they need.

With the proceeds from their First Annual Poker Run, Big Paws Canine Foundation hopes to place 10 new service dogs with wounded veterans who would otherwise not be able to afford them. Those who are not able to participate in the run itself are still welcome to join in the festivities at Biggs Harley-Davidson. Poker run registrants will be automatically entered to win an array of prizes donated by generous sponsors including the Tilted Kilt, Nylabone, and AA Worms.

Until March 15th, registration for the poker run is only $15 and includes a Big Paws Canine Poker Run t-shirt. After March 15th, registration will be $20 per participant.

Every year, thousands of veterans return from deployment and re-enter civilian life. This transition can be difficult enough, but can seem nearly impossible when that veteran has been wounded in the line of duty. Big Paws Canine Foundation aims to make that transition as seamless and comfortable as possible by providing these wounded men and women with highly trained service dogs to help them with their daily lives, regardless of their ability to pay.
