New York’s Center for Chiropractic & Decompression now offers a special chiropractic technique that relieves back pain in pregnant women. According to chiropractic studies, this procedure can also affect birth outcome, decreasing the potential for undue stress to the baby’s developing spine and nerve system.

“Webster’s breech chiropractic technique not only relieves pain but can make a large impact on the health of the baby”

The Center for Chiropractic & Decompression, located in Manhattan, NY, is now offering a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment (the Webster technique) for relieving back pain in pregnant women. Dr. Lauren Fries, a chiropractor at The Center, recently earned her certification to practice this technique.

The Webster technique, developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment in which the goal is to reduce the effects of sacral misalignment and or sacroiliac joint dysfunction. In doing so proper neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis can be restored and has been shown to be very successful in relieving back and hip pain in pregnant women.

“Pregnancy-related back pain is very common,” stated Dr. Fries, “and many expectant mothers are concerned about the options available to them during this stressful time. Chiropractic offers a safe, gentle and effective option for pain relief during pregnancy.”

In addition, the adjustment is believed to help aid in easing labor and delivery, not only for the mother but for the baby as well. The correction of the sacral misalignment may have a positive effect on what causes difficult labor. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best position possible for birth. Obstetric studies cite that correct positioning of the baby in-utero decreases the potential for undue stress to the babies developing spine and nervous system.

Published chiropractic case studies support the theory that the Webster technique is effective in promoting proper fetal positioning; however, further research is needed for a definitive analysis, and The ICPA is currently conducting additional research.

“Webster’s chiropractic technique not only relieves pain but can make a large impact on the health of the baby,”     stated Dr. Fries. “It can also make the overall delivery much easier. I strongly recommend that women come to The Center to have their spines checked regularly throughout the pregnancy. It can make a big difference for both the mother and the baby.”
