To quote the highly regarded coffee blog, Kevin Sinnott is a man on a mission: To shake up the coffee trade show establishment. This coffee-obsessive created the ultimate first-ever consumer coffee conference drawing top experts from around the world to create a coffee university where consumers will learn every brewing method available. CoffeeCON 2013 returns on May 4th at the IBEW Building, 28600 Bella Vista Parkway in Warrenville, IL. Last year over 1200 consumers attended this event, which is a one day coffee university. This year promises to be even bigger with more classes, more speakers and more roasters.

Returning as headline speaker is George Howell and his tasting seminar. George will be teaching among other things how to spot the nuances of dry and wet processed coffees. You will never taste coffee the same way after this lab. You can become that guy (regardless of your sex) who everyone calls “the one with the great palate”. This seminar is limited to only 150 tickets so CoffeeCON is asking for a donation to CoffeeKids, an organization that helps coffee farmers’ children, to reserve this in-demand special ticket.

This year CoffeeCON presents Christy Thorns of Allegro Coffee who will be speaking about coffee sustainability. Christy has traveled the world as a green buyer selecting the very best beans. With fifty percent of CoffeeCON attendees being female her talk should be especially inspiring. Christy is all about great tasting beans. Her taste buds are topnotch and she's the best in the business.

Another highlight is Jim Schulman, an amateur espresso enthusiast. Jim is known for his doctoral-level dissertations on water. Jim will take you through all the stages of preparing home espresso. He believes in working with the equipment you already own and making that equipment perform to its peak. If you’re getting into home espresso or just want tweak your technique, Jim’s presentation will make a difference.

Cup of Excellence will be another consumer educator presenting classes on how the world's top coffees become award winners. The classes will be presented by a winning coffee producer from Brazil. You will have a chance to taste Cup of Excellence which are the world most expensive coffees retailing for $30 to $40 a pound.

Other classes will include: Turkish Coffee, Vietnamese Coffee, Coffee Farming, French Press brewing, Chemex brewing, Aeropress Hacks, Automatic Drip brewing, Grinding, Viennese Cafe Culture, How to Host a Cupping Party, Food and Coffee Pairing. Many of these classes will be hands-on labs so that you will actually experience many of these brewing methods.

Roasters will from around the country will be sampling their very best coffees including Counter Culture Coffee who will be teaching brewing using handcrafted methods including pour over, Chemex and siphon and will be telling the compelling stories of ethically sourced, Direct Trade Certified coffee. In their classroom they will teach several courses on topics ranging from brewing science to soil science. Other specialty roasters will include Passion House, Half-Wit, Dark Matter, I Have A Bean, Oren's Daily Roast, Metropolis, River City Coffee, Fresh Ground and Regular Coffee with more roasters being added daily. You will have a chance to taste these artisan roasters’ individual styles in creating their own unique flavor profiles.

Added new this year is an outdoor roasting lab run by home roasters clubs from across America. Music will be provided by Chicago Acoustic Underground to make this World’s Biggest CoffeehouseTM. A massive prize drawing of coffee and equipment ends the day. There will be the opportunity to purchase coffeemakers, coffee and food items. Of course you may taste for free and attend all classes with your paid $10 admission. Price increases to $15 after March 31st and $20 at the door.
