Columbus Personal Injury Attorney Scott Elliot Smith Comments on Shopping Cart Injury Study
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) February 28, 2014 -- Asked to comment on a recent study that finds shopping cart injuries are on the rise, Columbus personal injury attorney Scott Elliot Smith said voluntary standards for shopping cart safety are not adequate and create an unacceptable risk of injury for children.
According to the Washington Post (“Despite warnings, about 24,000 kids are hurt annually in shopping cart accidents,” January 27), a study conducted by the Nationwide Children Hospital in Columbus found the number of shopping cart accidents increased dramatically between 1990 and 2011, injuring an average of 24,000 children annually.
“Shopping cart injuries are particularly troubling because an overwhelming majority of these accidents involve children. When a young child is subjected to serious head, neck, and back injuries, the results can be nothing short of traumatic,” said Smith, lead attorney at the Smith Law Office in Columbus, OH. “We have handled cases involving injuries to children. We have seen first-hand the devastating impact injuries to children have on Ohio families. That’s why we work so hard to hold the negligent individual or company accountable.”
According to the Washington Post article, common types of accidents include falls from shopping carts, falling over or running into carts, shopping cart tip-overs and crushing injuries caused by entrapment. The article said that researchers used emergency room data to conclude head injuries among injury victims increased from 3,483 in 1990 to 12,333 in 2011.
Researchers from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital told the Washington Post that voluntary safety standards have been deemed inadequate. The article said suggested design changes include improving performance standards for child restraint systems, placing child seating areas closer to the floor, and educating parents on safety belt use.
“This study reveals that shopping cart design and safety standards must be updated,” Smith said. “Injuries to children caused by shopping carts manufactured with design flaws cannot – and will not – be tolerated. It’s the moral and legal responsibility of manufacturers to produce safe products – especially those used by children.”
Smith said families whose children are injured in shopping cart accidents should seek the advice of legal counsel. An attorney can help pursue compensation and closure and hold the negligent company accountable, he said.
