Communications for Youth Institute (CYI) will host a series “Passport to Public Speaking” Saturday workshops beginning March 9 through April 20th, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), located at Manzanita Hall, Room #122. These series of workshops are available at “no cost” to local high school students who are interested in improving their public speaking. Also, there will be an Open House event for parents and the CSUN community on March 30 and April 20, 2013 to celebrate CYI’s 15th Year Anniversary.
The six week Saturday program will provide adolescents with instruction in basic public speaking and covers topics such as: speech anxiety, audience analysis, outlining, delivery, ethics and credibility, and informative speaking. Speaking exercises include speeches of introduction, anecdotal speech, cultural artifact speech, process speech, and informative speech. Instruction is provided through a combination of discussion, lecture, activities, and workshop formats. The program also provides them exposure to the CSUN community and college atmosphere.
Parents and teachers recognize the overall improvement in students who participate in Communication for Youth Institute. “Youth students not only improve their public speaking skills but also build greater levels of self-esteem,” said CYI Director Josefa Gonzalez.
