Powerful drugs have a powerful effect on people’s bodies. It’s critical that the federal government subject such drugs to rigorous tests.
Hartford., CT (PRWEB) March 15, 2013
Hartford personal injury lawyer Joseph Morelli today said he is concerned residents in Connecticut and throughout the United States could be placed at risk due to GlaxoSmithKline’s pandemic flu vaccine. In Europe, the drug has been linked to an increase in narcolepsy cases among children, according to Reuters on March 8.
The U.S. government has similar fears, which could affect the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of a nearly identical GSK vaccine, the Reuters article states.
“Powerful drugs have a powerful effect on people’s bodies,” said Morelli, a Connecticut drug injury attorney. “It’s critical that the federal government subject such drugs to rigorous tests. If steps are not taken to protect the safety of the public, that puts everyone at risk. That’s why the FDA exists: to protect the health and well-being of all Americans. All those factors need to be considered before any new drugs, including GSK’s flu vaccine, are approved for use in this country.”
The British Medical Journal recently reported that children in England who received GSK's Pandemrix vaccine during the 2009-10 H1N1 swine flu pandemic were 14 times more likely at risk of developing narcolepsy, according to Reuters. Narcolepsy is a chronic and potentially debilitating sleep disorder that can cause hallucinations, daytime sleepiness and cataplexy, a form of muscle weakness precipitated by strong emotion, the article states. Based on such health concerns, the European Medicines Agency recommended restricting the use of Pandemrix in people under 20 years old in Europe, according to Bloomberg on Feb. 26.
As a result, Reuters reported that the even though the FDA voted to recommend approving a nearly identical vaccine based on earlier studies, one member of the 14-member FDA advisory panel believes the panel should reconvene to review the drug again based on the new data.
Morelli, a New Haven personal injury lawyer, said pharmaceutical companies need to take action immediately when new information comes to light showing that a drug they have produced or marketed poses a threat to consumers.
“Too often, individuals and their families suffer because a drug company cuts corners and puts profits before safety,” Morelli said. “That’s not right. That’s why we work so hard for people injured by dangerous drugs. Our goal is to help people get the compensation and closure they deserve. We also want to send a message that such negligent behavior will not be tolerated.”
Morelli said anyone who suffers adverse side effects from a drug should seek medical assistance immediately. “After getting medical help, you should talk to an experienced attorney who can discuss your legal options. Too much is at stake to put off taking action or to try to deal with the insurance company and the pharmaceutical corporation on your own.”
