Standard auto insurance claims in Illinois declined last year by about 8.5%, at a time when auto accident involving animals increased by 7.7 percent, according to a report published earlier this month by the Telegraph of Alton, Illinois. Although there have been many things done to prevent deer related automobile accidents, the increase in the deer population raises the estimates of deer related auto accidents in Illinois to anywhere between 700,000 to 750,000 projected accidents.
The peak of the deer-related automobile accidents is between late October to end of November, during the winter reproduction season of deer. Eighteen percent of deer related accidents take place in November.
“Animal related auto accidents can cause tremendous bodily injuries and property damages, as well as fatalities in many cases. Most of the accidents involving deer occur between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 PM when deer are most active and flock together in herds.
While paying attention to roads and animals on the highways may reduce the chances of animal related accidents and claims, "paying attention to the insurance coverage is very important, especially for commercial trucks that travel long distances in remote areas. For a truck tractor, hitting a deer can cause massive loss to the front body and the engine of the truck, with potentially large claims.
