Dentist Who ‘Wrote the Book’ Urges Patients to Beware When They Hear or See ‘Sedation Dentistry’
New Albany, IN (PRWEB) April 16, 2014 -- Dr. Ronald Receveur, a Louisville cosmetic family dentist, is warning the public to be informed of what “sedation dentistry” means.
Recently, dentists have begun advertising "sedation dentistry," assuming the public knows what it means. Dr. Receveur wants the public to know that not all sedation dentistry means they will be asleep during their dental visit.
Sedation dentistry has become popular because it allows patients who have traditionally avoided the dentist for fear of needles, drilling noises, sensitive teeth or severe gagging begin seeing a dentist and getting the dental help they need.
Dr. Receveur, who practices in New Albany, Ind., across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky., has written a book that explains the different levels of sedation and the advantages of IV sedation dentistry over oral sedation.
“Sometimes you will see dentists advertise ‘sedation dentistry’ or ‘sleep dentistry,’” Dr. Receveur said. “But not all sedation is the same, and not every type of sedation is right for every patient.”
Dr. Receveur has been trained to offer IV sedation, which is provided intravenously and takes effect in just a few minutes, as well as traditional oral sedation, which is usually a pill or a gas.
“We're able to offer you a cure for dental fear with oral and IV sedation, which very few dentists offer, to guarantee your comfort,” Dr. Receveur said.
For some patients, oral sedation works fine, he said. The first step would be nitrous oxide (also called happy or laughing gas), which they inhale during the procedure. However, it is most effective on patients with very little anxiety and for uncomplicated dental treatments.
The next level of sedation is for a patient to take a pill an hour or so before their procedure. They are mildly aware of what’s going on around them during the treatment.
“While you will still be conscious during this level of sedation, you’ll be very relaxed, drowsy and be less aware of what is going on around you,” Dr. Receveur said.
But if patients want to be more sedated during the procedure, Dr. Receveur has to give them another pill and wait another 20 minutes or so.
“I’ve performed some pretty extensive procedures with oral sedation, so it is very useful in the right situation and for the right patient,” Dr. Receveur said.
When most dentists advertise sedation dentistry, oral conscious sedation such as gas and pills is what they mean.
For patients with a lot of anxiety who do not want to remember what has happened, IV sedation is a better choice, Dr. Receveur said.
“We have many dentists refer patients to us because they tried oral sedation and the patient still struggled getting through the procedure comfortably,” he said.
Using IV sedation is quick and predictable, and the level of sedation can easily adjusted during treatment, Dr. Receveur said. Plus, long procedures are easily completed without the need for numerous visits because the patient is deeply sedated.
“That means you can have dentistry completed in one or two visits that might have required six or eight visits in the past,” Dr. Receveur said. “IV sedation allows us to complete a lot of dental work in a short amount of time.”
IV sedation may also be the best choice for patients with special needs. Someone who is autistic may not understand what is happening and why a person with a mask is looming over them, so they may then act out. This may be dangerous for both patient and dentist. So IV sedation may be the best choice.
