Doe Run Mine Rescue Team Named Overall Champion at Northern Regional Contest
St. Louis, Missouri (PRWEB) August 28, 2015 -- The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) mine rescue team recently earned the title of overall champion at the Northern Regional Mine Rescue Contest. The event, which took place from July 28 to 30 in Clymer, New York, tested 10 mine rescue teams’ abilities to handle emergency situations underground.
“We are proud to have some of the best mine rescue teams in the country; made up of employees dedicated to the safety of their colleagues,” said Steve Batts, general manager at Doe Run’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO). “Our Maroon Team secured the national mine rescue championship title in 2014, and we are pleased to see that they are still performing at the top of their field. By taking the time to hone their skills at competitions, our mine rescue teams help support Doe Run’s commitment to keeping our employees safe, especially in the event of an emergency.”
Doe Run’s Maroon Team won the Northern Regional overall champion title by securing high marks in a number of events, including first place in the field competition. During the field competition, the team completed a simulated mine emergency that tested how well team members adhered to mine rescue procedures and how quickly they finished specific tasks, including a written exam and successful use of personal protective equipment and first aid equipment.
The Maroon Team also finished in second place in the first aid test and second place in the team technical test, which measures participants’ expertise in operating breathing apparatuses and gas-level monitoring.
Another Doe Run mine rescue team, the Gray Team, finished in third place in the team technical competition at the Southeast Regional Mine Rescue Contest in Maysville, Kentucky, in late June. Team Captain Wayne Marlin also earned first place in the written team trainer test.
“While mine rescue contests like these are competitive, the main goal is to sharpen our skills and learn best practices in safety from the industry,” said Steve Setzer, team captain of the Maroon Team. “Our teams participate in several competitions throughout the year, and undergo at least eight hours of rigorous training each month, so we are ready to aid our fellow employees.”
Current members of Doe Run’s Maroon Team include: Captain Steve Setzer, Andrew Hampton, Isaiah Henseler, Jarred Tackett, Richie Brewer, Denny Dickerson, Peter Rothermich, Nathan Setzer, Jake Piatt and Luke Davis. Gray Team members include: Captain Wayne Marlin, Randy Hill, Charlie Walker, James Gamblin, Denny Keene, Chris Brawley, Robby Vetter, Nathan Woods and Garry Moore.
All new mining employees undergo 40 hours of in-depth safety training on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) guidelines.
In addition, the company’s six underground lead mines, located in Missouri’s Viburnum Trend, have earned the National Mining Association’s prestigious Sentinels of Safety Award 27 times since 1971.
