First Annual Orchid Show at the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory in Oklahoma City February 28-March 29
Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) February 13, 2014 -- In the first seasonal show at the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory since the Gardens’ remodel, the Crystal Bridge will be filled with hundreds of orchids arranged in a variety of creative displays by resident orchid expert and Conservatory Curator Nate Tschaenn.
The Orchid Show is included with regular paid admission to the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. Admission is $7 for adults; $4 for kids 4-12; and $6 for seniors 62+, active military and students. Children younger than four are admitted at no charge. Hours are Monday – Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Orchids are like the superstars of flowering plants, and we will be showcasing over 800 of them from tropical areas around the world. Visitors will learn about the many different types of orchids and why orchids are so unique,” said Tschaenn.
Walking tours will be offered with paid admission Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m. Lectures by Tschaenn will also be offered as follows during the Orchid Show:

Free for members; $10 for nonmembers
Learn the ins and outs of how to care for orchids at home, and learn from a demonstration how to pot and divide orchids. You’ll gain information on watering and proper lighting, and learn answers to questions that will help demystify this fascinating flower.
2-3 p.m., Saturday, March 22: Orchid Delirium

In the early 19th century, Europeans became enraptured by specimens of orchids collected by explorers in the new world. Their fascination quickly turned into a highly-developed passion that led people to risk life and limb to acquire these precious commodities, a passion that persists to this day. Come and hear tales of how these orchid hunters fought animals, diseases, inhospitable environments, and even each other in pursuit of orchids.

The Orchid Show is a project of the Myriad Gardens Foundation’s Conservatory Specialist, Nate Tschaenn, who is a graduate of the prestigious Longwood Program in Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware. As a graduate fellow he had the opportunity to visit and study at dozens of botanical gardens and arboretums in the United States and abroad.
Tschaenn previously worked for four years as the lead horticulturist for a 10,000 sq. ft. Costa Rica themed conservatory at Cleveland Botanical Garden. He received his bachelor's degree in landscape horticulture from Ohio State University where he also worked as a student employee in the biological sciences greenhouse.
