One of the first references of olive oil and olive trees is in the Bible and dates back to 1000 B.C. In the story of Noah’s ark, a dove is released from the ark and returns with an olive branch. The olive branch signified the presence of land and peace between people and God.
The bible also portrays olive oil being used to anoint powerful individuals and places. Kings and princes were anointed with olive oil, along with objects of worship and altars. The gift that was offered to Jesus by the Magi was spiced olive oil.
Jesus was also offered a gift of the anointed plate upon his death. This plate is the plate that Jesus was laid to rest in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. Jesus’ body was laid upon the plate and then blessed with gifts and oils.
In some of today’s religious ceremonies, oil is still used when receiving the holy sacraments. The Oil of Catechumens is used for baptism. The oil is applied to the forehead of the Baptized person and in many circumstances the baptized participant is fully dunked in the Holy oil. Oils are also used as Holy Chrism for confirmation. In this circumstance, the oil is blessed by a bishop and is then used to bless the confirmed member.
The oils have been and continue to be used for anointing the sick. In this process, holy oil is blessed and administered to sick members of the church. It is a sacrament that is derived from the New Testament and is considered a rite that represents God’s Grace to the sick.
Even with regards to holy days, olive branches and oils are present. One of the primary holy days featuring olive oil and branches is Palm Sunday, a day for which olive branches are blessed and presented to the Catholic Church. These branches are blessed and exchanged to signify peace amongst the anointed one’s presence.
