Former NCAA basketball athlete and coach, Ryan Stock, publishes a new mindfulness book on Dec. 5 titled Buddha Was a Baller: How to Awaken the Athlete Inside You via Opportune Publishing House.
Written for athletes of all levels, Stock’s autobiographical book combines his professional experience as a former athlete and coach with Buddha’s core principles in an effort to help athletes manage mental health, increase focus and reduce stress. “After studying the teachings of mindfulness and Buddha’s core principles from monks around the world, I decided to combine it with my knowledge and love of sports into a book that athletes can easily relate to and learn from,” Stock said. “Buddha’s teachings written from the perspective of a basketball player and coach will hopefully be more relatable to athletes. I want to help athletes get serious about their brain health and awaken their inner athlete. Meditation techniques have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve happiness. Combined with Buddha's core teachings, any athlete can become peaceful, patient, mindful, and strategic—all of the attributes necessary to enhance one's physical ability and overall quality of life.”
After facing traumatic experiences and personal hardships that led to anxiety and depression, Stock ventured out to change his life and career. “I immediately quit my job as a basketball coach at a top university and went on to study brain health, meditation and mindfulness techniques from the world’s best monk’s and educators. It has since allowed me to re-program my brain, improve my mental health and achieve true calmness and peace. Brain health and mindfulness are not subjects that are proactively addressed in the athletic realm and I hope to help tackle the issue with my new book. So many athletes silently suffer from anxiety, depression and other mental health issues and I believe it's time to address the topic on a broad scale,” said Stock, who is scheduled to finish his mindfulness certification from UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center this fall.
