Destination wedding couples to the Hawaiian Islands most often choose a beach as their wedding venue. Most beaches now require a permit from the State of Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is from these permits we get our information.
Not all weddings take place on a beach. Many choose a park, a church; a private residence and some even circumvent the permit process and do their wedding on the beach without one. Of the 23,723 marriage licenses issued in 2012 at least 8285 were done on a beach where a permit was acquired. The rest where done elsewhere.
The majority of beach weddings take place on the Island of Maui, followed by Oahu, Kauai, the Big Island of Hawaii and the least number were on Lanai. These statistics broken down by Island are as follows:
215 permits were issued on the Big Island of Hawaii. These are the names of the most popular beaches and the number of permits pulled in 2012 (Kukio 99, Abay 38, Hapuna 17, Wailea 15, Kikaua 9, Kaunaoa 9, Puako 5)
1615 permits were issued on Kauai. These are the names of the most popular beaches and the number of permits pulled in 2012 (Shipwreck 375, Keoneloa 285, Anini 113, Tunnels 107, Hanalei bay 94, Lydgate 69, Puupoa 55, Waioli 37, Mahaulepu 41, Kalapaki 32)
14 permits for the Island of Lanai.
4798 permits were issued on Maui. These are the names of the most popular beaches and the number of permits pulled in 2012 (Makena cove 1060, Kapalua bay 769, Poolenalena 688, Palauea 435, Makena suft 283, Charlie Young 192, Maluaka 187, DT Fleming 145, Wailea 140)
1643 permits were issued on Oahu. These are the names of the most popular beaches and the number of permits pulled in 2012 ( Waimanalo 627, Kahala 239, Waialae 152, Duke Kahanamoku 118, Lanikohonua 77, Lanikai 70, Turtle Bay 12)
Other interesting stats include what time of day is most popular. 6564 permits were for PM hours which 90% were what we call sunset weddings. 1721 were for AM hours. Maui'd Forever owner Mark Steffan says "many of these locations can be seen for Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii on the Maui'd Forever website. For best advice though I suggest a short conversation that would include your accommodations location and the time of day you desire".
