Hundreds More At-Risk Seniors Receiving Hurricane Care Pack Deliveries from Chen Senior Medical Center
Miami, Fla. (PRWEB) September 07, 2017 -- Hurricane Irma, a record-breaking storm barreling through the Caribbean, already is forcing evacuation orders in multiple Florida communities. This morning, Governor Rick Scott again encouraged residents to be prepared, and to stay aware of requests being made by government officials working to save lives.
Recognizing the extra challenges many seniors ages 65 and older can face in preparing for catastrophic weather events, Chen Senior Medical Center helped sponsor the 2017 Meals on Wheels South Florida Hurricane Care Packs initiative that’s already provided thousands of at-risk seniors with five days of non-perishable, shelf-stable and nutritious food they could consume following a weather disaster, like Irma, that could interrupt normal food sources.
Volunteers from Chen Senior Medical Center are working diligently to complete the remainder of some 450 priority home deliveries of Hurricane Care Packs to seniors on the waiting list for weekly Meals on Wheels food service and the community service goal remains finishing these priority distributions before the arrival of hurricane Irma. Chen employees already hand-delivered 400 Hurricane Care Packs to seniors served by the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines, Fla.
“We’re accelerating the pace of remaining Hurricane Care Pack deliveries to seniors with significant nutritional support needs already confirmed by Meals on Wheels,” said Maina Gatonye, MD, Chief Medical Officer – North Market for Chen Senior Medical Center.
