Institute for Behavioral Training and Hawai’i Association for Behavior Analysis Partner to Provide eLearning Training to Parents of Children with Autism
HONOLULU, Hawaii (PRWEB) February 05, 2015 -- Institute for Behavioral Training (IBT) and Hawai’i Association for Behavior Analysis (HABA) today announced a partnership to make IBT’s Parent eLearning available to parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Hawai’i. IBT has trained over 5,000 people across the U.S. and other countries since 2013. The online tool provides parents and caregivers with in-depth training on ASD, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and behavior management techniques, as well as other important topics.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s announcement on March 27, 2014, autism impacts one in 68 children in the U.S. and one in 47 boys are diagnosed with ASD. Rates of autism in Hawai’i are consistent with these statistics.
“When a child is diagnosed, parents need accurate information and accessible resources. We want to make sure that we can be a part of the solution for families in Hawai’i,” said Cecilia H. Knight, director of IBT. “Placing appropriate training in the hands of parents is an important first step, and partnering with HABA offers a great opportunity to provide much-needed resources to the Hawaiian community through an organization that is already doing great work here.”
Dr. Amanda N. Kelly, president of HABA, said, "In Hawai’i, there are little to no services available to families of children with ASD. With the support of IBT and local autism organizations, we are now able to put information in the hands of those who need it most. We are grateful for these collaborations and we are excited to bring much needed services to our autism ohana."
HABA is hosting a community meeting in Honolulu for parents of individuals with ASD to discuss their current needs and concerns. The meeting will take place on Feb. 7, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the University of Hawai’i, Spaulding 155. IBT staff will be on site to provide free access to its popular Parent eLearning program, so parents and caregivers can access this training from their own homes and complete it at their own pace. The Parent eLearning training, which includes over 40 hours of material, is divided into modules that include information on the autism diagnosis, appropriate treatment (applied behavior analysis), managing problem behavior, working with siblings, and integrating the individual with ASD into the school, community, house of worship, and other natural environments.
