Sean explains that because spray foam adheres so well to walls and studs, it can be very difficult to remove if it has been incorrectly installed. Those unfamiliar with removing spray insulation properly can end up making matters worse, and attempts to hack the foam out can create foam dust, which can become airborne.
When it comes to home insulation, he adds, there is no one-size-fits all approach. Instead of using spray foam, property owners might want to look into cotton denim insulation, which is made from industrial scrap. There is also cellulose insulation, which can be either a loose filler, dense pack, or applied with a spray, and is generally made from recycled paper and other green fibres. But at the same time, cellulose insulation has a lower R-value, which means it insulates less efficiently.
“The fact is, there are trade-offs with each type of insulation. For example, some insulation may be more environmentally friendly, but might be made of material that does not perform as well as others,” Sean concludes. “When it comes to energy saving, nothing insulates as effectively as spray foam insulation.
