Many small changes can be made to make a big difference to energy consumption, whether at home or in the workplace.

While opinions regarding climate change and global warming may differ, it is impossible to deny that we are consuming more energy worldwide today than ever before. As a result, people are looking for more ways in which they can help the environment.
Global warriors World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have long been advocates for environmental change and one of their events in particular, Earth Hour, has continuously grown in popularity. This March, Kwiksure is looking forward to be doing its part for the environment and will be joining in Earth Hour.
Created by the WWF to raise worldwide awareness of climate change, Earth Hour first took place in Sydney six years ago when over 2.2 million people agreed to simply switch off their lights for one hour. Today, the annual event now holds the record for the world’s largest voluntary action for the environment and over 7001 cities in 152 countries are predicted to get involved this year.
As a result of being one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Hong Kong, like most big cities, requires a substantial amount of electricity to function on a daily basis. Many of Hong Kong’s attractive features are high energy consumers, such as the much loved MTR metro system and the infamous light show which occurs on a nightly basis.
While much of Hong Kong's energy consumption benefits the economy and allows for development, it uses an incredible amount and there is definitely room for changes to be made.
According to the HK Census and Statistics Department, December 2012 saw Hong Kong consume 11,281 terajoules of electricity in one month. To put this in to perspective, only 64 terajoules were released from the explosion of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima.
Many small changes can be made to make a big difference to energy consumption, whether at home or in the workplace. Unplugging electrical appliances after use, using energy efficient light bulbs, increasing the temperature of airconditioning are just a few examples.
This year, Kwiksure is excited to be joining Earth Hour and has pledged that the Hong Kong office will turn up the temperature of the air-conditioning in the office for the day on Friday the 22nd of March. Furthermore, if Kwiksure can get 60 people to sign up for Earth Hour too, the entire office will dress in summer wear for the day.
By signing up on the WWF website, you can get involved and pledge your commitment to Earth Hour. Not only will you be doing your part for this special event, but if you paste the link to your pin on our Facebook page, you can help us reach our goal of sharing the spirit of Earth Hour in Hong Kong and encourage environmental awareness in our city.
Earth Hour will officially take place on March 23rd at 8:30pm, join the movement and do your part this year. Visit http://www.earthhour.org/ to find out more.
