Austin Oral Surgery has made a donation to the American Cancer Society 2013 Relay for Life at St. Edward’s University on April 12.

The Relay for Life is an overnight community fundraising walk that serves to honor cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost to cancer while raising money for cancer treatment and research.

During the event, teams camp out around a track while members take turns walking around the track. The event’s organizers provide entertainment, food and games for participants in a family-friendly environment.

“I’m proud to be able to support this fantastic event,” said Dr. William Cain, Austin Oral Surgery’s Georgetown oral surgeon. “The Relay for Life helps those affected by cancer form a community with one another. The night of Relay for Life really means so much to everyone involved because of celebrations like the Survivors’ Lap, where cancer survivors make a lap around the track to celebrate their successes, and the Luminaria ceremony, which honors those we’ve lost to the fight and those who are still fighting.”

The money raised through the event goes to support a variety of activities within the American Cancer Society, including cancer research, free services that teach female cancer patients beauty techniques that improve their self-image while receiving chemotherapy and the Hope Lodge, which provides a free and comfortable place for patients and caregivers to stay while receiving treatment.
