Local Orlando Law Firm Discusses City Looking Forward to New Police Chief Taking Position
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) February 28, 2014 -- After three years serving as Orlando Police Chief, Paul Rooney announced his retirement on February 12th, 2014, and Mayor Buddy Dyer announced Deputy Chief John Mina to be the successor and 38th Police Chief of Orlando, “The City Beautiful.”
At 45 years old, John Mina, has served as a stellar member of the Orlando Police Department for 23 years. He has served the citizens of Orlando in various divisions, including Criminal Investigations where he moved up to Division Commander, North Patrol Commander, West Patrol, Community Policing, the Tracking Unit and Drug Enforcement and as Staff Director for former Police Chief Val Demmings.
In addition to his Chief work, he also served 17 years on the SWAT team as Team Commander. His most recent position was as commander over 400 deputies in the Patrol Services Bureau.

Mina credentials exhibit the qualifications to take the position, and his appointment went into effect on February 24th, 2014 when he went before the Orlando City Council for confirmation.
Val Demmings, who was the first woman to serve as Police Chief, continued many of the programs her husband, Jerry Demings, had instituted. Jerry Demings was the First African-American Police Chief in Central Florida. He developed and utilized Community Policing putting it into practice in Orlando.
Chief Paul Rooney accepted the position in May, 2011 when presiding Police Chief Val Demings stepped down to run for Congress. In just three years, Chief Paul Rooney’s leadership has been most visible in the reduction of violent crime in Orlando by seven percent.
Chief Rooney, was instrumental in instigating new programs in domestic violence, beginning a more intensive body camera study and promoted new support plans for the elderly. Rooney was also significant in focusing on officer training and safety.

Mina has proven to work hard in protecting Orlando communities under proven practices, as well as developing programs and procedures that will meet the growing changes of one of the largest cities in Florida. The Theme Park Capital of the World will continue the heritage of strong and capable leaders in the Sheriff's Department.
