A strain of Clean Green Certified™ chemical-free marijuana recently won first place at the 2nd annual High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in San Francisco. A Clean Green Certified™ strain also won the top honor last year.

The fact that Clean Green Certified™ strains have won top prizes at the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup both years of the competition shows that very high quality medical cannabis can be grown in this manner.

For the second straight year, a Clean Green Certified™ medical cannabis has taken the top prize at the prestigious High Times Medical Cannabis Cup, held on June 26th, 2011 in San Francisco. In 2010, the first place prize went to a Clean Green Certified™ sativa strain of medical cannabis. This year, the top prize for indica strains went to a Clean Green indica submitted by the industry standard for marijuana dispensaries, Harborside Health Center.

The 2011 first place prize in the “Indica” category was awarded to Harborside Health Center’s Delta 559 Bogglegum, a strain grown in strict accordance with Clean Green Certified™ methods. The win is further evidence that growing marijuana in compliance with local law, without harmful chemicals and fertilizers, and with regular facilities inspections creates a superior product.

Clean Green Certified™ is an independent third-party verification program that assures medical cannabis bearing its label is grown without harmful chemicals and fertilizers, and is compliant with strict quality control and legal practice standards from seed to final patient. It is the only California medical marijuana inspection certification program that uses a state- and federal-licensed testing lab for soil samples, and the only certification program that assures compliance with local laws.

“I think the top prize going to Harborside Health Center continues to confirm the high level of training and qualifications that come with the Harborside values,” said California medical cannabis compliance lawyer Chris Van Hook, founder of the Clean Green Certified™ program. “Harborside was an early supporter of our Clean Green Certification program, signing on and becoming our first certified dispensary. Their win of the top prize reconfirms that top quality medical cannabis can be grown without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, reducing the impact on the earth.”

The three-part California medical cannabis certification process for growers includes a confidential legal compliance review; an onsite inspection of the grow area, including input review standards modeled on the USDA Organic Certification requirements; and a thorough agricultural crop inspection, looking for mold and mildew, pest problems, and facilities contamination. It is the only program that sends soil samples from every grower at every inspection to a licensed agricultural lab to test for over 300 pesticides, confirming compliance with the program and further ensuring patient safety.

Clean Green Certified™ assured that Delta 559 Bogglegum was grown in accordance with these standards. The strain won top prize over 25 other entrants in the “Indica” category.

This is the second year a Clean Green Certified™ strain has taken the top prize: in 2010, GreanBicycles’ Vortex received first place in the “Sativa” category.

“It does take extra time and effort to grow Clean Green Certified™ marijuana, so some growers wonder whether it’s worth it,” acknowledges Van Hook. “The fact that Clean Green Certified™ strains have won top prizes at the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup both years of the competition shows that very high quality medical cannabis can be grown in this manner.”
