Urges Marion Officials To Reconsider Proposed Trailer Ordinance

In light of recent announcements regarding a proposed size limit on trailers, boats, and campers stored in homeowner’s yards, asks Marion officials to reconsider.

Last week, officials in Marion, Iowa proposed a new ordinance that would limit the size of trailers, and other towable items, that could be stored in yards as reported by the Marion Times. asks city officials to reconsider the change.

The proposed change was prompted last year, when a resident complained that a neighbor’s trailer was blocking their view. The city council, upon hearing the complaint, began considering a more restrictive size limit.

The current size limit for trailered things such as RVs, boats, aluminum boat trailers, and campers, is set at 25’ long, 11’ high, and eight feet wide. The proposed change would impose a limit of two such items per home, and would require that they be stored on a concrete slab behind the home. According to city officials, this is specifically geared to prevent storage of such items in driveways.

The staff at Used Boat Trailers feels this is needlessly restrictive. Telling residents of Marion that they cannot store their property in the driveways of their own homes, simply because it would block their neighbor’s view is ridiculous, they feel.

The ordinance has already been discussed before the city council, and has now been referred to the Planning and Zoning Commission. If they okay the change, it will return to the council for final approval. urges city officials to carefully consider their decision, and asks any residents that disagree with this proposed ordinance to contact the city council and have their opinion heard.

People with questions and concerns about the change are encouraged to contact Kesha Billings, with the Planning and Development Department, at kbillings(at)cityofmarion(dot)org as listed on the Marion Times article.

Any society requires the people living in it to compromise their own desires for the sake of others. Is sacrificing storage space to safeguard a nice view asking too much? The staff at UBT believes it is.
