Merced California Seeks to Ramp Up Local Bicycle Efforts – Noted Bike Lawyer Jeff Nadrich Weighs In
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 20, 2013 -- The city of Merced is gearing up to implement new strategies and construction efforts to improve roads for local cyclists, according to a report from The Sacramento Bee. The new draft, created by the Merced County Association of Governments, is a follow-up to a 2008 plan which sought a 25-year strategy to make the city more bike accessible. Noted bike attorney Jeff Nadrich believes that the plan shows real promise.
According to Nadrich, “Merced might seem like a small, unsuspecting city, but the whole state is watching. Merced has shown more initiative than most other cities in California when it comes to creating a truly bike-friendly community, and recent efforts have inspired many local residents to leave their vehicles in the garage and commute to their jobs and leisure activities by bicycle.”
Nadrich believes that a successful bike campaign in Merced may inspire other California communities to follow suit. “We know that biking is better for the environment, healthier for the waistline and easier on the wallet, but most cities just aren't concerned about the needs of bicyclists. If the roads were safer and more accommodating, we would see a massive statewide upsurge in bicycle use. As a bicycle rider and enthusiast myself, it's an issue near and dear to my heart.”
According to the Sacramento Bee report, Merced has invested more than $4 million in the development of a citywide bikeway system over the past 25 years. The new draft seeks to continue that development with the implementation of more than 100 new bicycle-related projects. The plan is specifically concerned with the western industrial area near Highway 59, as well as the universities, the airport region, the downtown district and southeast Merced by Golden Valley High School.
The draft is currently scheduled to be adopted by the Merced City Council in September, and certified by the Merced County Association of Governments in October.
