Monster Energy’s Alex Coleborn Takes Second Place at the Inaugural UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Chengdu, China
CHENGDU, China (PRWEB) November 14, 2017 -- Monster Energy congratulates Alex Coleborn on taking second in the first ever UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, along with Monster Army’s Colton Walker who rounded out the podium in third. Battling a knee injury and the world’s best riders, Coleborn was able to secure the silver-medal finish, while ever consistent Walker qualified in third and landed securely in the bronze medal spot at the end of the weekend.
For the first time ever, over 100 athletes from 25 countries including Australia, Venezuela, Japan and across Europe, came together to compete in the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Chengdu, China. Monster Energy athletes Pat Casey, Alex Coleborn and Kyle Baldock were joined by Monster Army riders Colton Walker, Justin Dowell and Bryce Tryon to compete for the World title.
After two days of qualifying and semi-finals, the top 12 riders competed for the first ever World title. United Kingdom’s Alex Coleborn advanced smoothly through both rounds, while Monster Army riders Colton Walker and Justin Dowell also advanced to the final.
While other riders were launching huge tricks over the box jump and flair double whips on the quarters, it was Coleborn’s technical riding that had him standing out among the competition.
“The contest was insane and the level of riding was so high,” said Coleborn. "I had a head on crash with Jack Clark in practice and hurt my knee so to get second place in the overall contest of the BMX Worlds is amazing. I couldn’t be more happy with the results, and am really excited for next year.”
Dowell also had the opportunity to compete for the Junior World Title, and is the youngest Monster Army athlete to advance to the final.
“I was so happy to make it into the finals, and coming away with 8th is insane," he said. "I tried my hardest, but unfortunately had a crash in my first run. I’ll be back and can’t wait for next year.”
The 17-year-old rider finished 8th in the overall contest, but finished 2nd among all of the youth riders. The young talent is definitely on track to take more wins in the future, and Dowell is definitely a leader amongst the young riders.
This year marks the first year BMX Freestyle joins the UCI World Championships event series. The Urban Cycling World Championship wraps up the 2017 competition season for most of the park riders, leaving athletes hungry for the 2018 season.
