Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas Celebrates 10 Years of Babies, Breastfeeding and Women Who Help Save the Lives of Premature and Ill Infants
Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) July 24, 2014 -- Known as “liquid gold,” human breastmilk is the gold standard of care to feed premature and medically fragile babies in hundreds of hospitals across the United States. When a mother’s own milk is not available, nonprofit milk banks including the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas help meet those babies’ medical needs. Now in its 10th year of providing pasteurized donor human milk to hospitals and outpatients, Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas will celebrate breastfeeding women with events and social media activities during World Breastfeeding Week Aug. 1 – 7 and National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, beginning with Latch On Texas on Sat., Aug. 2, 2014, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Fort Worth Botanic Gardens.
Co-sponsored by the Mothers’ Milk Bank and Tarrant County Breastfeeding Coalition, Latch On Texas will kick off National Breastfeeding Awareness Month with the goal of setting a new, statewide record of the most women simultaneously breastfeeding at one time, in one location. The official count of the most women simultaneously breastfeeding will officially be counted at 10:30 a.m. The event is free and open to everyone.
The Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas supports breastfeeding moms year-round, working with hundreds of donor moms each year who donate their excess breastmilk to the Milk Bank. Events like Latch On Texas help bring mothers and families together for camaraderie and support.
“We want to help families with babies and young children stay connected and feel like they’re part of a supportive community,” says Simone Summerlin, donor outreach manager for the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas.
To help families share their enthusiasm for breastfeeding and milk banking during Breastfeeding Awareness Month, Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas is hosting social media activities on Instagram and Facebook. Families can play the Photo-A-Day Challenge on Instagram by following @TexasMilkBank and using its daily prompt to share a cute photo with the hashtag #MMBNTPHOTOADAY. In honor of its 10-year anniversary, the Milk Bank will give away $10 gift cards on 10 days in August. Then on Wed., Aug. 6 at 11 a.m., lactation expert and Milk Bank Executive Director Amy Vickers will answer questions about breastfeeding and milk banking in an hour-long Facebook Chat.
“Breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world, but it’s not always easy, and we hope that our Facebook chat encourages women to ask questions and support each other,” Vickers says.
September marks 10 years since the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas first began accepting, pasteurizing and distributing donor human milk, in which time the organization has helped thousands of premature and critically ill babies in the NICU survive and thrive. It will commemorate the anniversary on September 18, 2014, at its annual luncheon at Ridglea Country Club.
