National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health wins 2013 Latinos in Tech Innovation and Social Media Award for best nonprofit

NEW YORK (PRWEB) September 20, 2013 -- The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) announces its award for best nonprofit in social media from Latinos in Tech Innovation & Social Media (LATISM), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing the social, civic and economic status of the Latino community through digital media.

Other nominees in the nonprofit category included MomsRising, National Day Laborers Organizing Network and National Hispana Leadership Institute.

“This award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the thousands of Latinas who use their voices to expand and declare their support for reproductive justice using social media outlets,” said Jessica González-Rojas, NLIRH’s executive director. “In a time when so many barriers threaten our health and so many restrictions limit our access to affordable, reproductive health care, social media amplifies Latina voices, helping us connect to one another, share our stories, and find solidarity to advance reproductive justice in this country.”

In NLIRH’s work to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health and justice for Latinas, their families and their communities, grassroots organizing is critical. Social media enables NLIRH to send far-reaching messages to connect communities, inform voters, and lift up Latinas everywhere. NLIRH and its partners have been able to gather widespread support through social media for these and other campaigns:

  • “#15years is too long to wait,” held during the 4th annual National Latina Week of Action for Reproductive Justice, which called on Latinas to urge policymakers to adopt common-sense inclusive immigration reform that addresses the needs of immigrant women and children;
  • “We Are DC,” which collected photo testimonials from across the country to share with Congress urging them to support reproductive decision making for the residents of the District of Columbia (D.C.), no matter their income; and
  • “Yo te apoyo/I support you,” a campaign voicing Latino/as support for loved ones who have had or need an abortion.
  • “Soy Poderosa,” on ongoing campaign that collects photos and quotes from Latinas about how they show their power.

“A heartfelt thank you to LATISM and to all who voted for us. This award will support our work to reach even more Latinas and increase our power in demanding reproductive justice for all,” González-Rojas said.
