National Military Family Association Receives $500,000 Grant to Improve Education for Military Children
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (PRWEB) November 28, 2017 -- The National Military Family Association (NMFA), a nonprofit that works to strengthen military families, announced today a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to elevate the voices of military families and provide them with tools to work for change in their schools, school districts and states.
Two specialized Operation Purple Family Retreats®, geared toward families of K-12 children who have recently moved or have an upcoming move to a new duty station, will be funded by the foundation. The Family Retreats will include facilitated training sessions to teach parents how state level standards affect their children’s education, how to identify whether their school district or state has adopted high standards, and how to effectively advocate for their children’s education.
NMFA will also launch a multi-media campaign to address some of the biggest questions and misperceptions regarding military kids’ education, including topics like inconsistent math standards and how common state standards are chosen.
“We are so thankful to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for helping bring to light an issue at the heart of military families,” said Joyce Raezer, NMFA Executive Director. “Together we’ll take on this issue, giving our nation’s families a platform to share their experiences and engaging with them to fight for the high, consistent standards their children deserve.”
This new collaboration is part of NMFA’s larger initiatives to support America’s 2.8 million military family members through policy and programs that keep them strong.
