National University Nursing Student Elected to National Student Nurses’ Association’s Board of Directors
San Diego, Calif. (PRWEB) June 04, 2015 -- A nursing student at National University, the second-largest private nonprofit university in California, has been elected to the 10-member board of the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA), a 60,000-member group dedicated to fostering the professional development of nursing students in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
National University student Tanya Davis was elected as a representative from the NSNA’s Western Region at the NSNA’s 63rd Annual Convention, and she recently returned from an orientation meeting in New York. Her reaction to her election: “It feels awesome to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of nursing students across the United States.”
National University’s Nursing Degree Program, housed in National University’s School of Health and Human Services, is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Davis, 32, is typical of the National University’s Nursing Program’s students. With a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from UC San Diego, Davis was working at a Poway laboratory isolating and culturing stem cells. But realizing her interest was in working with people, she enrolled in the Nursing Program at National University in 2014.
During her orientation, Davis learned about the NSNA since National University has a chapter. “When I first enrolled in nursing school I was one of those people who didn’t join things. But I heard about this group and I thought there were a lot of services and a lot of opportunities they could provide, so I wanted to get involved and take advantage of it.” Just a few months later, Davis was elected to the National University chapter’s board.
“Tanya Davis exemplifies the best of the National University Nursing Program,” said Dr. Gloria J. McNeal, Dean of the National University School of Health and Human Services. “We couldn’t be more proud of her and we wish her the best in her new leadership position that will have lasting impacts on nursing education nationwide.”
Davis has been told she will be serving on a Legislation and Education Committee and a Bylaws Committee. She is set to graduate with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing early next year. She already has clinical experience at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, and at Kaiser Hospital and the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
She says enrolling at National University was one of the best decisions she’s made.
“Everybody is so supportive,” Davis said. “All of the nursing students stick together, and we’re all going to be friends for life. I’ve met and talked with nursing students from other programs, and I have not seen the same kind of camaraderie that we have here. And that doesn’t even mention the incredibly qualified National University nurses and nurse practitioners who are absolutely brilliant.”
Through its School of Health and Human Services, National University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing, including a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia. The School has also recently launched an Accelerated Track for Vets to BSN (V2BSN) Project to provide veterans interested in nursing careers with academic and professional support. Students new to nursing and Licensed Vocational Nurses can pursue a career as a Registered Nurse through the BSN Programs. Registered Nurses can pursue their bachelor's degree in nursing through the RN completion program. Registered nurses holding the BSN credential, who are interested in pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner, may enroll in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
