New England Law | Boston Center for International Law and Policy Offers Multiple, Experiential Programs
Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 07, 2015 -- Externship programs with the U.S. State Department and the International Bar Association are among the new, résumé-building options available to New England Law | Boston students. The programs are just two of the many opportunities made available through the Center for International Law and Policy (CILP).
CILP promotes the study and understanding of the relationship between international law and policy, with special emphasis on problems of an economic, environmental, criminal, or humanitarian nature. Through the international law school programs of CILP, students and faculty collaborate to research, analyze, and provide resource documents on topics related to current international legal issues. Students also immerse themselves in the practice of international law during domestic and international externships.
The center is director by Professor Lisa Laplante, who joined the New England Law faculty in 2013-2014 and teaches Business and Human Rights, Public International Law, Torts, and Transitional Justice. The former human rights lawyer was a researcher with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a co-founder of the Praxis Institute for Social Justice, both based in Peru, and she writes on international law and justice topics.
“The law school's global perspective and commitment to finding solutions to international legal challenges is expressed through our center's courses, programs, and career options, whether they take place in Boston or around the globe,” says Laplante.
The new U.S. State Department ties enable New England Law students to secure externships in Washington, DC, with the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, and with the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, Office of Policy and Resource Planning. The International Bar Association is based in London, and students can apply for the Legal Internship Programme, which offers positions in London and Washington. Students can also intern at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in the Netherlands.
CILP partners with the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR), a coalition of organizations that creates, promotes, and defends legal frameworks to ensure corporations respect human rights in their global operations. Students can contribute to the ICAR project, which is currently focused on drafting model legislation and accountability standards and lobbying for a new law in Massachusetts.
New England Law and its faculty are regular participants on the global stage. Meetings have been conducted in Boston and abroad in recent months involving international legal experts and organizations from China, Colombia, Lithuania, Rwanda, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Uzbekistan.
The law school also offers a concentration in Immigration Law, a dynamic field that features highly rewarding and exciting job opportunities. The concentration provides students with a further focus while in law school and additional credentials for when they enter the job market.
