New Jersey Cosmetic and Sedation Dentist Dr. Michael Chusid Comments on a Recent Study Linking Alzheimer’s Disease to Poor Oral Health
Livingston, N.J. (PRWEB) August 21, 2013 -- A recent study by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in the United Kingdom links poor oral hygiene and gum disease to Alzheimer’s disease. “Many patients don’t understand that their oral health correlates to their overall health. This study shows just that. When it comes to your oral health, you can never be too safe,” Dr. Chusid comments. The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, compared ten brain samples from dementia patients and ten patients who did not have dementia. In the brains that were affected by Alzheimer’s disease, the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis was present. Porphyromonas gingivalis is found in the oral cavity where different forms of periodontal disease can be present. It can enter the bloodstream through various commonplace dental activities – biting, chewing, brushing, and eating for example. Dr. Chusid explains, “Poor oral health can lead to systemic infections. Not only is it linked to dementia, as this study shows, but also it’s linked to heart problems. The recommended two visits to the dentist per year for cleanings are crucial to maintaining a high level of good oral hygiene.”
The presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis does not necessarily mean a patient has Alzheimer’s, but patients may be more susceptible to similar symptoms like memory loss and confusion. Although causation has yet to be proven, the study remains open and supports correlation of this theory at the very least. Experts recommend that people see their dentist once every six months. Many overall health problems can be found in a regular dental check-up, even prior to problems becoming symptomatic.
