Oroville Economic Alliance Offers an Oasis in the Middle of California’s Drought
Oroville, CA (PRWEB) February 26, 2014 -- As the nation, and the world, focus their attention on the hardships facing 11 states affected by drought, one northern California community is holding its own, with enough water to meet its demands for the present and foreseeable future. The Oroville Economic Alliance, which recently (before the drought) proclaimed itself “California’s Business Oasis,” is more than living up to its name, even as it supports those regions less fortunate than itself.
“Before the drought hit the West, including our community, we had begun telling the world about our abundance of affordable acreage, ready workforce, and lowest-priced water in the nation,” states Oroville Economic Alliance Director Michael Glaze. “Naturally, this makes Oroville an ideal place for water-intensive businesses, such as manufacturing, data centers, agriculture, and beverage companies. But, quite unexpectedly, it’s also made us a rare bright spot amid this tragedy that’s swept the West.”
Indeed, while California is under a governor-mandated drought emergency, and its more populous (and well-known) regions are taking drastic measures to conserve and reduce consumption, Oroville is not imposing drought contingencies. While it strongly supports the drought declaration and the statewide voluntary reduction in water use, it has sufficient water for business, environmental and consumptive uses. The South Feather Water and Power Agency—which provides key areas in Oroville and Butte County with its water—reports that consumptive demand is only 10 percent of supply during the 2013-14 drought-declared water year, and 2 percent of normal-year supply.
“What this means,” explains Glaze, “is that the South Feather Water & Power Agency is not anticipating the need to impose restrictions or rationing requirements on its customers; although it is encouraging its customers to do their part to assist other less fortunate communities.”
