Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, The PBSO and The School District of Palm Beach County Urge Motorists to “Keep Kids Safe”
West Palm Beach, Florida (PRWEB) August 23, 2016 -- Sheriff Ric Bradshaw warns motorists that his officers will be watching for those who speed in a school zone or don’t obey the rules of the road when a school bus is stopped.
In conjunction, The School District of Palm Beach County is also asking parents to be cautious when driving, as they know we can all be in a rush, especially when dropping off or picking up our children, but our children are precious and we need to keep them safe.
As a friendly reminder, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office wants to share these safety tips from the Florida Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles Department:
1.) All drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
2.) On a highway divided by a paved median, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
3.) On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide, drivers moving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the bus (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus.
4.) Be alert and watch for children especially near schools, bus stops, school buses and in school parking lots.
5.) Pay extra attention to lower speed limits in school zones.
6.) Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards.
7.) Only drive or park in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school.
One of the biggest fines a motorist can receive is for speeding in a school zone. A normal ticket for exceeding the speed limit by 10 miles an hour is $206, but in a school zone that same ticket will cost $306. Ric Bradshaw said, “Remember, the speed limit in a school zone is 20 miles per hour, that’s the limit.”
Drivers who improperly pass a stopped school bus commit a moving violation subject to a citation and will be required to complete a basic Driver Improvement Course upon conviction.
