According to court filings, Chen alleges that Wang’s 2016 circumnavigation was incomplete because Wang “forgot” to return to her point of origin.

A Palm Beach Circuit Court Judge has denied a motion by Ninety-Nines China Governor Jingxian “Saki” Chen to dismiss Julie Wang’s counter-complaint against her in the 2019 defamation lawsuit Chen commenced against Wang’s husband. Chen alleges in the lawsuit that Wang’s husband defamed her by stating that his wife is the first Chinese woman to have flown a global circumnavigation in an airplane. According to court filings, Chen alleges that Wang’s 2016 circumnavigation was incomplete because Wang “forgot” to return to her point of origin.
Chen sought to freeze Wang out of the lawsuit despite placing Wang’s flight at the center of the dispute. In ruling that Wang’s suit against Chen can proceed, the Judge rejected Chen’s claim that her lawsuit against Wang’s husband “had nothing to do with Wang.”
The Judge also rejected Chen’s argument that the Palm Beach court lacked jurisdiction over her. Chen herself had voluntarily come to Palm Beach County to prosecute her lawsuit, availed herself of Palm Beach County’s court system and should be prepared to defend against counterclaims arising from the same nucleus of operative facts as Chen’s own claims, the Judge said at the hearing. The Judge ordered Chen to answer Wang’s complaint by August 13th.
Wang, a regional airline captain and FAA-certified flight instructor, made international headlines in 2016, when she became the first Asian woman to complete a global circumnavigation flight in an aircraft, flying around-the-world solo, across the middle routes of both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, in a single piston-engine aircraft modified to carry extra fuel.
