Rhode Island Author’s New Memoir Shares Love of Nature with Aging Father and Autistic Child

Bedford, NH (PRWEB) November 01, 2014 -- Mike Freeman’s, new memoir, Neither Mountain nor River: Fathers, Sons, and an Unsettled Faith, has just been released by New Hampshire’s Riddle Brook Publishing.

Freeman, previously the author of Drifting: Two Weeks on the Hudson, calls his new memoir a “loving tribute to the man who gave me an appreciation of nature, and a message to my children, to whom I’m passing on this legacy.”

Freeman, who grew up in Pennsylvania where he spent endless hours hunting, fishing, and trapping with his father, has spent most of his life in the natural world, living and working in Connecticut, Vermont, California, and Rhode Island. He also spent nearly ten years in Alaska, where he worked as a salmon counter up and down the state. More recently he returned to the east coast to marry and raise a family. Living in Rhode Island, he now shares that love of nature with his two children, one of whom is autistic. “I still see that same fascination with nature in her,” he says. “It’s amazing to watch her enraptured by a butterfly or an insect, or by the leaves falling from a tree.”

In writing the book, Freeman was careful not to make it a book “about” autism. “What I’m hoping to pass on to my children,” Freeman says, “is a love of nature that I believe all children should appreciate. Having an autistic daughter just means that I have to be more aware of the ways she responds to the outdoors. The book, really, is for anyone who has had—or wants—this kind of connection between themselves, their children, and the larger world.”

The Providence Journal, in a recent review, calls Freeman’s book “a revelation,” and author Howard Frank Mosher calls the book “a beautifully written memoir.”

In addition to Neither Mountain nor River and his previous book, Drifting: Two Weeks on the Hudson, Freeman has also published a number of essays in leading magazines, including Gray’s Sporting Journal, The North Dakota Quarterly, and The Gettysburg Review.
