Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Tufts Medical Center, and MetroWest Medical Center reviewed “published studies evaluating women with depressive symptoms who took antidepressants while pregnant,” according to PsychCentral.com. In the review of their findings, which is published in the journal Human Reproduction, the researchers write that there is little evidence of benefit from the antidepressants prescribed for the majority of women of childbearing age—and there is ample evidence of risk,” PsychCentral.com reports.
The researchers found “a strong signal of congenital abnormalities, the most noted of which is the association between the use of the antidepressant, Paxil, and cardiac defects,” according to PsychCentral.com, and they write that “preterm birth is, perhaps, the most pressing obstetrical complication.”
The researchers further observed that Newborns who were exposed to SSRIs in utero are more likely to exhibit development delays, and increased incidence of low birth weight; pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia; newborn behavioral syndrome; and respiratory distress, according to PsychCentral.com. And the researchers reported that a Kaiser Permanente study showed a “two-fold increased risk of autism spectrum disorders associated with maternal treatment with SSRI antidepressants during the pregnancy,” PsychCentral.com says.
