Modern dental techniques have rendered dentistry nearly pain-free. Yet dental fears and phobias remain exceptionally common. In some cases, patients will put off even critical dental work due to their fears. For those who are afraid of the dentist, sedation dentistry can be a life-changing solution.

In February 2019, Savannah Dental Solutions is pleased to offer a complimentary sedation dentistry consultation to anyone who feels that this solution might help. Simply call the office at (912) 354-1366 and mention this offer.

Dental sedation falls into three basic types:

Nitrous Oxide
The mildest form of dental sedation is nitrous oxide, sometimes known as laughing gas. The patient inhales a carefully balanced mix of nitrogen and oxygen through a mask over the nose. Nitrous oxide induces deep relaxation and a sense of well-being, but the patient remains awake and responsive. The effects wear off in just a few minutes when the mask is removed, making this an excellent option for patients who afraid of sedation. This is the only form of sedation that allows the patient to drive home after the procedure.

Oral Sedation
Oral sedation uses medication in pill form to induce moderate sedation. The patient can respond to instructions from the dentist, but will feel drowsy and may even fall asleep. Depending on exactly which medication and dosage are selected, the patient will likely feel groggy for the rest of the day. It is important to bring someone to the appointment to drive you home.

IV Sedation
IV sedation is the deepest form of dental sedation available in the dentist’s office. Patients tend to be very groggy and loopy, and often fall asleep in the chair. It is easy to rouse patients from IV sedation, but it is common to feel somewhat out of it for the next 24 hours. Patients must bring someone to drive them home and remain with them throughout the night.
