Should Hydraulic Fracturing be a Legal Method of Natural Gas Extraction in New York State?

Cazenovia, NY (PRWEB) April 18, 2014 -- The Cazenovia College Debate Society will take on the issue of hydraulic fracturing at the 14th annual "Great Debate" at Cazenovia College on Wednesday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in McDonald Lecture Hall, Eckel Hall (37 Lincklaen Street). The debate, in which affirmative and opposition teams will analyze the pros and cons of this environmental topic, is free and open to the public. It will also be live streamed at https://new.livestream.com/cazenoviacollege.

Maureen M. Louis, J.D., associate professor and director of the Communication Studies Program, is also the Debate Society’s coach. She says, “Debate is always very challenging. Students must gain knowledge in a particular subject and then communicate effectively as advocates in a public setting. It is a great honor to serve as the teacher and coach in this process.”

Louis assigns each student to a particular position on each team. She says, “I draw from my observations of the students in class, my perception of their particular strengths, and where I feel they will have the most positive learning experience.”

Ten students on the team will argue the affirmative:

  • Savannah Chinski, or Schenectady, N.Y.
  • Jazmine Daniel, of Cedarhurst, N.Y.
  • Mariceli Iturbides, of New York, N.Y.
  • Zachary Levanduski, of Elmira Heights, N.Y.
  • Matthew McMann, of Richfield Springs, N.Y.
  • Steven Ochoa, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Chelsea Radziewski, of Cicero, N.Y.
  • Francheska Rosado, of Bronx, N.Y.
  • Jordyn Sogoian, of Watervliet, N.Y.

Ten students on the team will argue the opposition:

  • Malik Adair-Mountain, of Nedrow, N.Y.
  • Alec Felitte, of Cliffton Park, N.Y.
  • Sarah Ferguson, of Jamesville, N.Y.
  • Nicole Lennon, of Hobart, N.Y.
  • Joshua Parker, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
  • Jason Ruoff, of Lansing, N.Y.
  • Rachael Seider, of Stuyvesant, N.Y.
  • Lara Sibi, of Lincoln Park, N.J.
  • Matthew Simons, of Syracuse, N.Y.
  • Kayla Sommers, of Rensselaer, N.Y.

Louis will moderate the debate, while a team of Cazenovia College faculty, including President Mark Tierno; Dr. Sharon Dettmer, vice president of academic affairs, dean of the faculty, professor of social science and international studies; Roxy Spano, visiting assistant professor, humanities; and Dr. Andrew Ó Baoill, assistant professor, communication studies, will serve on the judging panel.
