Susan Phillips Read at Greenberg Traurig to Co-chair New York State Judicial Advisory Committee on Evidence
NEW YORK (PRWEB) August 03, 2016 -- Susan Phillips Read, former Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals and of counsel at global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, has been designated by the Chief Judge of the State of New York to serve as co-chair of the new Judicial Advisory Committee on Evidence alongside Nassau County Supreme Court Justice William Donnino. The Committee consists of 15 current or former state judges who will compile a guide to New York’s existing law of evidence readily available to judges, lawyers, and the public.
The aim of the guide is to provide an easily accessible, important reference tool to discern New York’s evidentiary rules. The publication, which will be updated annually, will be strictly advisory – rather than a binding set of rules – allowing for the continued case-by-case adjudication of the rules of evidence as justice dictates.
Read served as an Associate Judge on the Court of Appeals from 2003 until her retirement in August 2015. She was one of seven judges on New York's highest court. During her tenure, she authored majority opinions addressing novel issues of employment and labor law, including at-will employment and telecommuting; insurance law, including coverage of mental disabilities; conversion of a not-for-profit insurer to a for-profit corporation; tax law, including the constitutionality of New York's “convenience of the employer” test; criminal law; and commercial law, including issues related to liquidated damages, the in pari delicto doctrine, and residential mortgage-backed securities. Read also authored dissents addressing such topics as school funding, consequential damages, and the accrual of the statute of limitations in suits against the State.
Read has counseled clients on commercial matters and transactions and antitrust compliance, and has represented clients in grievance arbitrations and discrimination actions. In addition, she has supervised environmental litigation and negotiations with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and various state environmental agencies.
