Tamils for Obama urges Jeyalalithaa: Don’t Meet with Wigneswaran until he says ‘sorry’ to TN Tamils
New York, New York (PRWEB) September 30, 2013 -- Tamils for Obama wrote a letter to Chief Minister Jeyalalithaa of Tamil Nadu in which they warned her to be cautious in dealing with Mr. Wigneswaran.
“We think we know what he is trying to do,” said a spokesman for the diaspora Tamil group. “Besides trying to get some of her prestige to stick to him, he wants her to become more sympathetic to the Colombo view of a united Sri Lanka, a view he supports.”
The letter to CM Jeyalalithaa said “We expect that Mr. Wigneswaran, who might soon be CM of the northern province of Sri Lanka, will try to persuade you to abandon your support of an international tribunal looking into GOSL war crimes during the recent civil war. He will also probably do anything he can to advance the cause of a united Sri Lanka with no special homeland for the Tamils in the northeast.”
The letter continues “A recent election showed that Tamils in the northern province are angry and want no part of the current status quo in SL. Mr. Wigneswaran interprets this as meaning that they want a united Sri Lanka without any interference from outsiders, including diaspora Tamils and Tamil Nadu voices.
“We disagree,” the letter went on. “We believe that northeast Tamils reject the status quo because they live in fear of the armed forces and paramilitaries who are their close neighbors and who regularly cause them pain and suffering. We think northeastern Tamils want a safe and secure homeland where they can be proud of themselves and take part in their own government.”
The letter noted that Mr. Wigneswaran has frequently and publicly said that diaspora Tamils and Tamil Nadu Tamils should stay out of matters that (he thinks) only concern SL Tamils. We think he is wrong. Tamil Nadu Tamils have done much to publicize the suffering and injustice endured by Tamils in northeastern Sri Lanka. The voices of these cousins of ours have raised awareness and sympathy among non-Tamils, and by doing this they have made our oppressors in Sri Lanka more cautious in carrying out their ethnic cleansing. We should be grateful for their help.
Mr. Wigneswaran most recently said this in interviews with Hindustan Times (Sri Lankan issue being used by TN for political gains, says Justice CV Wigneswaran, July 19, 2013) and The Hindu (TN politicians exploiting Lankan Tamils issue: C.V. Wigneswaran, September 13, 2013), the spokesman pointed out.
“We urge you, Ms. Jayalalithaa, not to meet with Mr. Wigneswaran,” Tamils for Obama wrote in their letter, “until he has at least apologized to the TN Tamils on this matter.”
Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
