We salute and appreciate the efforts of the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Trucking Association in this recent campaign, but we are, frankly, disheartened by what the results of their work indicate.
Holiday, FL (PRWEB) June 30, 2012
Tampa car accident lawyer Lawrence Disparti said today that the results from a recent Florida Highway Patrol campaign indicate that aggressive driving continues to be a problem in the state.
“It’s clear that aggressive driving, such as speeding, following too closely and changing lanes improperly, is an ongoing hazard across Florida, including in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area,” said Disparti, founder of Disparti Law Group, a Tampa personal injury firm.
“We salute and appreciate the efforts of the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Trucking Association in this recent campaign, but we are, frankly, disheartened by what the results of their work indicate.”
State troopers issued more than 4,900 citations between February and May during the Patrol’s Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks campaign. More than 2,000 citations were for violations associated with aggressive driving, according to a news release.
The campaign focused on motorists’ driving behavior around large trucks in an effort to reduce the number of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.
The FHP advertised the campaign on billboards and radio, and collaborated with the Florida Trucking Association to conduct activities at schools and community centers around the state to educate drivers about how to share the road safely with trucks.
The FHP approach is in keeping with a recommendation made by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) earlier this year. The GHSA suggested that local law enforcement agencies combat speeding and aggressive driving through stricter enforcement and public education.
Despite progress across the U.S. in areas such as increased seat belt usage and fewer drunk driving deaths, a GHSA report found that speeding continues to be a major factor in about one-third of the nation’s traffic fatalities.
Speeding is often a component of aggressive driving, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as “committing a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property.”
The Disparti Law Group helps car accident victims in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area and across Florida to obtain compensation to help them with doctor’s bills, property damage, lost wages and pain and suffering through personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits.
“Many of those who would drive aggressively and otherwise violate the law might shrug off a ticket, despite its expense,” Disparti said.
“At our firm, we believe in holding drivers accountable for the harm they cause to persons or property. That’s why we believe it’s an important for victims of aggressive drivers to contact an attorney who can explain their legal rights and options.”
