When most people think of credit unions, they think of affordable financial services and low loan rates. The reason for this is they are not-for-profit cooperatives, which are established for the mutual benefit of each member. For credit unions, social responsibility is another top priority, which is particularly true for TAPCO Credit Union (http://www.tapcocu.com).
TAPCO Credit Union, established in Pierce County in 1934, now proudly displays the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award for “outstanding achievement in a socially responsible program.” This award was presented to TAPCO by its peers in the Washington Credit Union League among credit unions with assets ranging from $150 million to $350 million.
The winning entry was “TAPCO’s Great Escape Raffle,” which successfully raised $15,000 for Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County, http://www.i91.ctc.edu/crimestoppers. Crime Stoppers reduces crimes and improves the quality of life by offering a reward to those who supply information about criminals.
One of TAPCO’s major market segments is Pierce County’s heroes in uniform - police, sheriffs, firefighters and other emergency personnel.
To win the Dora Maxwell award, TAPCO had to answer socially-responsible questions to a panel of judges, such as:
- How did your project goals show social concern for the community?
- How did the project help solve community problems?
- How does the project demonstrate credit union values of mutual self-help, cooperation, economic empowerment and volunteerism?
- What are the measurable results?
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Program was established to encourage credit union involvement in community projects and activities. Community involvement is a great opportunity to give something back to the community.
Dora Maxwell was a pioneer in the development of credit unions in the U.S. In 1932, Maxwell was responsible for organizing credit unions comprised of farm groups, which were in an agriculture crisis due to bank failures. With Maxwell’s unrelenting devotion to the credit union cooperative, she helped the movement grow during the trying times of the Great Depression and championed the rights of the poor. The credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” was further developed by Maxwell with her dedication to ensuring credit unions supported their own communities.
TAPCO Credit Union started in 1934 through the hard work and efforts of nine City of Tacoma employees.
These nine employees realized that traditional banks and savings institutions were formed to make money for their owners. With this underlying purpose, it was sometimes hard for traditional workers to receive the help they needed.
The nine founding members created a cooperative institution dedicated to working for people, a not for profit financial institution also known as a credit union.
As word of the new credit union spread, membership grew. Employees from Pierce County and more than 200 businesses, associations and communities eventually signed on as approved member groups – providing the benefits of credit union membership to their own employees and members.
Today, over 24,000 people belong to TAPCO. Each member has learned firsthand about the advantages of belonging to a nonprofit financial institution. You can be a member too.
As a cooperative, each TAPCO member is also an owner and has a voice in how the credit union operates. That voice keeps TAPCO focused on the founding members' vision of "People Helping People."
While maintaining a professional staff to run daily operations, TAPCO's governing policy is set by the Board of Directors, a group of hard-working volunteers elected annually by members.
