Tariq Drabu Welcomes New Research About the Effects of Dairy Foods on Oral Health

Tariq Drabu, dentist in Manchester said, “It is well known and widely understood that dairy products are good for us and are part of a healthy balanced diet. Dairy products are particularly important for good healthy bone and teeth development. However, very little research has been done on how dairy foods affect our oral health. I welcome this recent research and will be studying it further in depth.”
The new research study was originally published in the May/June 2013 issue of the respected journal, General Dentistry. The research results indicate that dairy foods could help to protect our teeth against decay resulting in cavities.
Tariq Drabu, leading dentist spoke more about the research study’s results, saying, “The study was conducted using a sample of 68 young people aged between 12 and 15 years old. Researchers took a close look at the levels of plaque that could be detected in the subjects’ mouths before and after they had consumed a variety of cheese, milk and sugar-free yoghurt. As most dentists will know, it is the low ph. foods that produce an increase in risk of tooth decay and the development of cavities. The research found that although there was no change in the mouth ph. for subjects who consumed yoghurt or milk, the subjects who ate cheese were found to have a much higher ph. suggesting that cheese has anti-cavity properties.”
Tariq Drabu, dentist, went on to say, “While I welcome this interesting and helpful research, I also think it is important to point out that the best way to avoid tooth decay, or the development of other oral diseases, is to practice careful diet control with respect to the intake of sugar and it's frequency as well as good oral hygiene. This is especially true for young people whose teeth are still developing. It is vital that they follow a regular routine of card with their diet and good oral hygiene practice to ensure they have good oral health in later life. I believe this research forms an important part of our understanding of how food affects our teeth and oral health. But equally, we must always ensure patients understand that all foods can cause tooth decay if regular brushing is not practised.”
He closed by saying, “The research shows that dairy foods are good for our health, our teeth and in protecting against cavities. I have always been an advocate of encouraging patients to eat a varied and healthy diet. Dairy products make up part of a balanced diet, and certain dairy foods will provide consumers with a much better option than high-sugar snacks and beverages which are extremely harmful to teeth and gums.”
