The Henry Ford Hosts the Big Read Dearborn Kickoff Event, March 8, 2014
Dearborn, Mich (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- On March 8, 2014, The Henry Ford will host The Big Read Dearborn Kickoff, a free event taking place inside Henry Ford Museum’s Prechter Promenade and Anderson Theatre beginning at 11:00 a.m. In conjunction with the Dearborn Public Library and other community organizations, The Big Read Dearborn is a 10-week literary adventure that provides opportunities for children, teens and adults to discover Jack London’s The Call of the Wild.
During the kickoff event, visitors can pick up a complementary copy of The Call of the Wild, hear a dramatic reading from the book by the Players Guild of Dearborn and enjoy a screening of Gold Rush with silent film star Charlie Chaplin. In the Promenade there will be a photo opportunity with real dog sled equipment and prospectors gear, a winter camping display by the Boy Scouts, a make and take activity for kids and a display of The Call of the Wild artwork from Dearborn Public Schools students.
The Big Read is a grant program from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Dearborn Public Library is one of 77 organizations that received a grant in May 2013 to host a Big Read program in their community.
From March 8 through May 17, 2014 there will be opportunities to discover the themes of The Call of the Wild through movies, book discussions, art activities, lectures, a photo contest and more. The book will also be integrated into the curriculum at several local schools. The program will wrap up with a special celebration at the Dearborn Public Library featuring activities for the whole community in May.
