Pastry Chef, Educator, and award-winning culinary traveler Susie Norris takes us on a road trip of the world's best baking traditions. Through French classics like Creme Brulee and Eclairs; through American regional specialties like Cheese Grits and a New England Turkey dinner; through viennoiserie and the beautiful cakes of Europe, Norris guides us through easy, medium, and advanced recipes for families, home cooks, and fellow food adventurers.

Baking is an international language, an art form, and for some, a calling. The term applies to everything that comes out of the oven: soufflés, meat and poultry, cakes, sweet and savory pies, breads, and of course cookies. Food writer, pastry chef and educator, Susie Norris believes that home-baked meals and mood-lifting sweets unite communities and families around the world. In her new cookbook, A Baker’s Passport (Amazon/February 2019), Susie shares over 200 technique-driven recipes culled from her global travels and her award-winning blog, Food Market Gypsy, designed to inspire home cooks as well as experienced chefs.

“I’m a lifelong, culinary road-tripper traveling through the world’s great food towns and traditions to explore what is baking where. This book visits beautiful countries with artisan baking traditions,” says Norris. “By exploring recipes in their regions, we help keep those traditions alive and relevant.”

Throughout the pages of A Baker’s Passport Norris, teaches techniques for classic baked dishes and explores heirloom recipes, and the context of their origins. For example, why do we consider croissants to be French when they originated in Vienna? How did Shoo Fly Pie get its name?

A Baker's Passport presents recipes with easy-to-follow steps and measurements. The photography is beautifully simple and highlights the detail of each dish, often with travel photos from its region. Recipes include sweet and savory favorites such as Black Forest Cake from Germany, Enchiladas from Mexico, and French classics like Quiche Lorraine, Coq au Vin, and Creme Brûlée. Some of the other delicious recipes in the book include:

  • Almond & Chocolate Buttercream Cake from Budapest
  • Arctic Char en Croute from Iceland
  • BBQ Pork Bao from Hong Kong
  • Beef Wellington from Wales
  • Chicken Pot Pie with Sag Harbor Summer Vegetables from New York
  • Creole Crawfish Pie from New Orleans
  • Flourless Chocolate Torta Caprese from Italy
  • Irish Stout Cake with Boiler Maker Icing
  • Parker House Rolls from Boston
  • Sacher Torte from Vienna
  • Shepherd’s Pie from England

“My goal is to bring the joy of regional baking home. Take an international culinary excursion without leaving your kitchen with A Baker’s Passport and taste the world! With this book as your passport, we’ll bake together.”
