A businessman has defended his online reputation management company and denied that it uses unethical tactics.

Nathan Barker said his firm did not try to influence consumer forums such as TripAdvisor and Review Centre by mounting dirty tricks campaigns.

The boss of Liverpool-based Reputation 24/7 spoke out after the recent controversy of people apparently posting fake reviews on TripAdvisor and other review websites as alleged in a recent Daily Mail article. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1323673/Fake-TripAdvisor-hotel-reviewers-named-shamed.html ) “We do offer ‘brand ambassador work’ and employ teams of content writers to try to bury bad publicity on the internet, anything else is pure speculation.”

TripAdvisor has come under fire for allegedly publishing negative reviews without checking their authenticity. More than 800 hotels and restaurants are even planning court action to try to force TripAdvisor to “name and shame” reviewers it suspects of fake posts.

But Nathan distanced his company from such practices. Amid a growing debate over whether the practice of online reputation management was ethical, Nathan said his company used SEO technology and other clever content “dilution techniques” to help firms improve their internet reputation by hiding damaging stories and promoting positive headlines. He said he also achieves this by using creative public relations and content writers.

A growing number of companies, especially from abroad, are tapping into the online skills of British website experts in reputation management. Firms like Reputation 24/7 use their in-depth understanding of search engines and how they work to make sure only the results that clients want are shown when people search for their name, business name or brand.

Nathan said: “Online chit-chat can make or break a company’s reputation. Some companies can live or die by online reviews. What we do is totally ethical and is a new twist on marketing and is becoming an integral part of companies’ marketing and brand campaigns.”
