Moving up in the BEAT100 Original Music Video Chart this week, following the recent acceptance of a BEAT100 “Ultimate Musician Award”, a Gold Song Award, and Gold Video Award, The Jar Family provides BEAT100 users with the refreshing sounds of ‘Industrial Folk’. A genre defined by the familiar story-telling aspects of folk, but with a modern feel, the band “can be as loud and trashy as The Clash in a bathroom or as sweet as Larry Love in a bath full of Southern Comfort,” says Keith Wilkinson, The Jar Family’s bassist and former member of the UK band Squeeze. Listeners of the band’s original song ‘Broken Minded’ on the BEAT100 charts will discover the band’s sweeter side, as the Jar Family provides a soothing performance of heartfelt lyrics accompanied by harmonica, guitar, accordion, electric upright bass, Cajon, and keys.
Based in Hartepool, England, The Jar Family formed in 2010 as a group of five singers and songwriters with a common mission “to be a modern day troubadours, writing songs and making a living by performing them as far and wide as possible,” says Keith. After initial gigs spent sharing a single guitar and banjo, the group soon advanced to sell-out acoustic shows and the recording of their highly acclaimed ‘Livingston Studios’ EP. Following this initial success, The Jar Family established a camp in the farmland outside of Cambridge for nine months to focus on serious songwriting and bonding time. Though the band enjoyed a summer “sitting round a campfire roasting songs and sausages, winter was a different story. [We experienced] frozen pipes, frozen kettles and a much greater understanding of Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow,” says Keith.
During their period of song-writing solitude, The Jar Family compiled a significant collection of original songs. As a result, they decamped in 2011 to record their debut album, ‘The Jar Family Album’, which is now available on iTunes. Including hits ‘Poolie Strut’, which quickly became the most requested song in history on the band’s local Radio Hartepool, ‘In for a Penny’, and the BEAT100 charting song, ‘Broken Minded’, the album features the entire seven-piece Jar Family in an outstanding blend of instrumentation that will most certainly attract listeners to the band’s strong and passionate performances.
In a unique divergence from traditional band organization, each song presents fresh vocals, as no single member is bandleader. Instead, Keith says there is a constant rotation of this role: “It’s one of our strengths. I’ve always maintained that listeners can only take so much of a front man”. As each member of the group contributes their own personal stories and inspiration to the songwriting process, The Jar Family has made it a rule that “whoever wrote [the initial song], sings it”.
As the BEAT100 Ultimate Musician Award-winning band, The Jar Family, continue to acquire a committed fan-base following over 80 performances in 2012 and the release of their full-length original album, the group shows no sign of slowing down in 2013. Currently recording their next album, ‘Jarmalade’, while also preparing for a March release of two new singles, ‘Machine’ and ‘Footsteps’, the Jar Family sees “miles and miles of motorway” ahead as they also continue to actively perform. BEAT100 users can stay updated on The Jar Family’s upcoming tour schedule and releases by viewing their BEAT100 profile, adding them as a friend on the site, and visiting the band’s website at thejarfamily.com.
