According to the news story, coal ash was being kept in a waste pond at Duke Energy’s power plan in Eden, North Carolina when a storm-water pipe running below the pond sprung a leak. This resulted in about 82,000 tons of coal mixed with 27 million gallons of contaminated water being released into the Dan River, which is serves as a source of drinking water. NBC News noted that this is enough to fill more than 40 Olympic swimming pools. The coal ash involved in the spill may contain toxic chemicals that include arsenic, lead, mercury and radioactive uranium. Following the incident, regulators were working to determine the impact of the spill on people and wildlife in the area.
